There Is No Law Against These Things

Day 2

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! (Galatians 5:22-23)

Joy is the second fruit of the Spirit and one that is often misunderstood. Joy is not merely happiness or a temporary feeling based on circumstances. Rather, it is a deep, abiding sense of delight in God's presence. As Psalm 16:11 states, "You [God] will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence." This serves to remind us that joy is rooted in knowing God and experiencing His nearness. The prophet Isaiah promises, "You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace," showing that joy is a gift God gives His people as they walk in His ways (Isaiah 55:12).

In the New Testament, Jesus emphasizes joy in John 15:11. Our Lord declares, "I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! "Notice how this joy comes not from earthly circumstances but from believers' relationship with Christ. Paul echoes this in Romans 15:13, praying that "the God of hope will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him."

James 1:2-3offers us a surprising perspective on joy, instructing believers to "consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. "True joy transcends trials, grounded in the unshakeable hope that God is at work in us, even through hardship.

Embracing Joy

Joy in our lives flows from knowing God and His promises. To experience true joy, focus on God's presence in everyday life—start each day in prayer, reflect on His goodness amid challenges, and thank Him for the blessings you have. When trials come, remember that joy can coexist with suffering, as God works in (and through) us in our difficulties. Share the joy of the Lord with others by encouraging them, celebrating moments of growth, and serving with a willing heart.

There Is No Law Against These Things

The fruit of the Holy Spirit, as outlined in Galatians 5:22-23, represents God's transformative work in the life of a believer. These qualities are woven throughout Scripture, offering a portrait of the Christlike character we are called to embody. Embracing these virtues is the definitive mark of a life changed by Jesus and empowered by His Holy Spirit. This nine-part devotional will explore just what that looks like in the life of a true Christ-follower.
