Prayers of the Bible

What is God’s dream for your life?

In today’s reading, God appeared to Jacob in a dream. In response, Jacob said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

Jacob had an encounter with God, and it changed his life. He even chose to tithe voluntarily!

In John 10, Jesus said, “I am the door (or gate). If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

God’s dream for your life will likely be different from Jacob’s—and probably different from what you imagine. Yet Jesus promises you an abundant life if you come to Him.

John Owen once said, “Our greatest hindrance in the Christian life is not our lack of effort, but the lack of our acquaintedness with our privileges.” And Billy Graham described prayer as “…the greatest privilege this side of Heaven. Jesus Christ died to make this communion with the Father possible.”

Do not be fooled: right now, where you are sitting, standing, or walking, is holy ground. God is ready to reveal Himself to you and teach you about the abundant life He has in store for you.

Do not be like Jacob, who said, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it.”

Instead, inspired by today’s reading, pray to God, encounter Him, talk to Him, and allow Him to shape your dreams. Learn to pray Jesus’ words: “Your kingdom come, your will be done.”

Today, ponder this: Are you aware of God’s presence where you are right now? How might prayer help you discover the abundant life He promises you?
