Set Your Mind On Things Above
"Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." - Colossians 3:2
In our busy world, it’s easy to get caught up in the endless demands and distractions around us. Our minds are often consumed with the challenges of work, relationships, personal ambitions, and all the little details that occupy our daily lives. But in Colossians 3:2, Paul calls us to lift our focus higher—to set our minds on things above, on Heavenly things, instead of being absorbed by the temporary things of this world.
So what does it mean to set our minds on things above? It means having a Heavenly focus; filling our thoughts with God’s Character, His Promises, His Eternal Perspective, and focusing on developing spiritual growth, pursuing a deeper relationship with God as the primary focus of our life.
Now the opposite of having a Heavenly focus would be having an Earthly focus that is absorbed with temporary concerns: our daily pressures, material desires, personal goals, and even the opinions of others that take priority over our relationship with God.
In our faith journey, distractions are anything that pulls our focus away from God and hinders our relationship with Him. These distractions can come in many forms and over time they can impact our spiritual growth and closeness with God. In James 4:8, the Word of God says "Come near to God and he will come near to you." God is a relationship God and He desires a personal and intimate relationship with each of us where we can experience His Presence and Love.
Over the next 7 days, we’ll explore common signs of distraction that can pull believers away from a close relationship with God. We’ll uncover how things like busyness, and even our own ambitions can become barriers that prevent us from living a life fully devoted to Him. With each devotional, we’ll dive into ways to recognize these distractions and discover practical steps to refocus on Jesus and build a deeper, more intentional relationship.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the invitation to set my mind on things above. Help me recognize and release the distractions that keep me from You. I want to live with a Heavenly focus, grounded in Your Truth and guided by Your Love. Lead me from distraction to devotion, drawing me closer to You. Amen.
