Just days before Jesus’ death, he and his disciples gathered together to celebrate the Passover, a Jewish holiday. Jesus and his disciples ate (what we call the “Last Supper”) and spent time celebrating together. Jesus knew that he would die very soon, so he chose to show his friends just how much they meant to him by serving them in an amazing way.
Jesus grabbed a towel and basin of water, knelt in front of his disciples, and washed their feet. This was a custom of the time for servants to wash visitors’ feet when they entered a house, but someone important would never wash anyone else’s feet. During this era, people walked most places, so their feet would be dusty, cracked, and caked in dirt. When Jesus washed his friends’ feet, he showed them how much he loved them by serving them and humbling himself. Jesus went completely against culture just to show his friends how much he loved and cared about them. After Jesus finished washing everyone’s feet, he challenged them to do the same for each other, He set an example of what it looks like to serve and treat others with humility; now, it is up to us to do the same.
Challenge: How can you serve someone else today? Make a list of ways to actively serve those around you, and try to cross one off each day!
Take it deeper: Throughout your day, find ways to actually “wash the feet” of those around you, Do some tasks that others might avoid or dread. Offer to clean up after the dog, take out the trash, or scrub the toilet. Humble yourself and serve someone else today.
