Marriage God's Way

DAY 2 OF 5

Loving Sacrificially in Marriage

Have you ever gone out of your way to ensure your phone’s battery never drops below 50%? You plan your day around finding outlets, carry extra power banks, and panic when it dips too low. It’s funny how much effort we put into something that doesn’t matter.

Now, think about how often we give less attention to things that do matter—like our marriage. While it’s fine to care about small things, how much more should we pour our energy into the relationships God has entrusted to us, especially the relationship with our spouse?

Ephesians 5 calls husbands to love their wives as Christ loves the church. What kind of love is this? It’s a love that is sacrificial, selfless, and sanctifying. Christ didn’t hold anything back; He gave His very life for His bride. This is the same devotion and care all husbands are called to show in marriage.

Loving your spouse means putting their needs before your own. It means caring about their spiritual, emotional, and physical well-being more than your comfort or convenience. Just as Christ works to present the church as holy and spotless, we should aim to uplift and honor our spouses in a way that glorifies God.

When you think of how meticulously Christ cares for His church, it’s humbling. His love isn’t dependent on how “deserving” we are—it’s constant, patient, and unrelenting. Imagine how different our marriages would be if we loved each other this way!

Rather than over-caring about trivial things like battery levels or spotless couches, redirect that energy into building a strong, Christ-centered marriage. The little things in life may make us chuckle, but the big things—like reflecting God’s love in marriage—are what truly matter.

Reflection Question:

  • How can you take practical steps to prioritize love and commitment in your relationship?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us what true love looks like through Christ’s sacrifice for the church; help me love my spouse with the same devotion, putting their needs first. Teach me to cherish and honor my marriage as a reflection of Your glory. May our homes be filled with Your grace and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
