God's Redemption Story (Revelation)

DAY 5 OF 40

The Seven Churches - Day 5

Jesus’ chief issue with the Christians in Laodicea was that they were “lukewarm.” Upon first glance, these people don’t seem as bad as some of the other churches appearing in Revelation. How could being lukewarm be as serious a charge as forgetting your first love, engaging in idolatry, or following false prophets?

In order to understand this, let’s look at what it really means to be lukewarm. When you go to a coffee shop and order a drink, you’re always asked, “Would you like that hot or iced?” Many people enjoy iced coffee, but no one enjoys hot coffee that's been sitting out and cooling off. Room-temperature coffee always ends up getting reheated or tossed down the drain because lukewarm is unpleasant. It’s neither one thing nor the other.

As Christians, we are not called to have nebulous, lukewarm identities. The Lord doesn’t want part of our hearts. He doesn’t want part of our devotion. He is looking for those who will surrender all. Today, pray and ask the Lord to give you a burning desire for Him and His ways.
