Made for More: Finding Greater Purpose Through Scripture's Well-Known Personalities

DAY 5 OF 8

Sometimes, we look to inspiring stories to learn we are made for more, just as we have done for the past few days. We’ve gotten encouragement from the audacity of Gideon, the tenacity of David, the quiet wisdom of Esther, and the unsure first steps of Moses.

But it can often be instructive to see instances when people who were made for more fall short of the mark. Like our brash shepherd boy David who, years and years later, forgot what he was made for and made terrible choices with grave consequences.

You probably already know the story: David was home, idle, when he should’ve been out doing kingly things. He saw Bathsheba, was stricken with her, listened to his libido instead of wisdom, and had an affair with her. She got pregnant, and David brought her husband home from the war front in order to try to legitimize the child, but when her husband acted with more integrity than David did, David kept the bad decisions rolling and had him killed so Bathsheba could become David’s wife.

What a disappointing fall for God’s former champion.

See, David never stopped being made for more! His defeat of Goliath didn’t accomplish everything God had for him! He had his whole life of more ahead of him, but when he saw Bathsheba, he chose to go for less instead of more.

And yet.

God met David in the depths of his depravity in the form of Nathan the prophet and offered him a corrective. It was tough and harsh, but God guided David back onto the path and reminded him what he was made for.

God will never, ever give up on you, no matter how deeply you sink. No matter how much less you think you’re made for, God will always insist you’re made for more. Always.

Listen to Him.
