Made for More: Finding Greater Purpose Through Scripture's Well-Known Personalities

DAY 2 OF 8

Sometimes, others see that you’re made for more, and even while they acknowledge that truth about you, they still try to make you for more in the way THEY would like to be.

Case in point: David, the shepherd boy.

You know the story. Goliath, the giant, the champion of the Philistines, is laying down threats and Saul’s army isn't doing anything about it. They’re just letting it happen! David, the youngest member of his family, goes to bring some food to his brothers, hears Goliath’s boasting, and asks why they’re letting this big dumb oaf get away with all his trash talk.

Fast-forward to David preparing to take on Goliath and we find Saul, the king, outfitting him in a suit of armor. Saul’s own personal suit of armor that is. Unsurprisingly, the suit of armor that fit a tall, stately king didn’t really work well on David’s slight, adolescent frame.

David took a few steps, knew it wouldn’t work, got all that armor off him, and went and handled business the way he knew how—as a shepherd boy.

Saul saw that David was willing and able to fight Goliath, that he was made for more than just watching over and protecting sheep, and then tried to force David into the mold that Saul was made in.

But that wasn’t David! God made David to be David, not to be Saul, and trying to fight like Saul would’ve been the opposite of wisdom. It would’ve been a disaster.

David needed to step into HIS calling, not Saul’s. David needed to step up the way GOD made him, not man.

When you’re made for more, you’re made to thrive the way God made you. Embrace your strengths fully and trust God to guide you in the way you need to go. Even if it’s to a riverbed to pick up some stones, you’re going to use to slay a giant.
