DAY 2 OF 7

Dealing with Fear

When studying Scripture, we’re often reflective. What does this passage mean in the historical context that it was written? How would it apply today? What does this really mean? While those are good strategies, sometimes we need to realize some passages are just promises – with no wrestling or reflecting required. 2 Timothy 1:7 is one of those passages.

We have not been given a spirit of fear. When we feel fear coming, we know that through the power of the Holy Spirit inside of us and through loving God and others, we can see clearly and overcome that fear. Period. End of story.

Let that fire you up right now. There’s nothing to be afraid of. Let that empower you. No matter what challenge you face in life, or as a parent, you don’t have to be afraid.

Even still, because we’re not perfect, there are times when we’ll be afraid.

Often, we can’t help but wonder and fear what’s happening or what may be happening in our lives or our children’s lives. But what does that fear get us? Nothing but stress. And what does that fear boil down to? A lack of trust in God. Oftentimes it means we’re not fully trusting God’s plans for our children.

We have to remember to humble ourselves and realize God loves our children far more than we can and knows far more about what’s best for them than we do.

In community, we as Christians must hold each other accountable to live out the Scriptures that we know to be true and form trusting and deep relationships, so we’re ready to receive this accountability.

Fear will come. This is natural. Like anger, I would say don’t feel bad when fear comes. Emotions are natural and normal. But how do you respond to them? Do you let it cripple you or make you shy away from opportunities to do what God is calling you to? Or do you see it as a lie from Satan and use it as an opportunity for love, power, clear thinking and to serve God in a mighty way?

I can’t predict what will cause fear in your life. To get ahead, take a moment to write down the things about parenthood that cause fear in you. Be honest about what scares you, so you can be poured into and become a greater parent.

Today's challenge: Pray God will provide peace during times of fear.
