Faith for the Faithless

DAY 5 OF 5

While traveling on a plane, author Lysa TerKeurst gave away her favorite Bible to a stranger. It was hard, but she dutifully obeyed and trusted God for another Bible. It wasn’t long before she received several emails, telling her about this “Bible man” sharing his new-found faith. Her obedience kept the gospel message going out to others who may not have heard it otherwise. The sharing of one gift caused a ripple effect.

Jonah knew the full impact of disobeying God and ignoring His direction. It’s very clear God’s will was accomplished in spite of Jonah’s procrastination. God appointed a storm, a massive fish, the weather, and even vomit as holy interruptions to get the message of salvation through Jonah’s “yes” ... when he finally made his way to Nineveh. The whole city responded positively and turned to God. Therefore, Jonah caused a ripple effect.

I don’t know about you, but I’m guilty of negotiating with the Lord about my faithful obedience. But I’m also gaining a better understanding of the Lord’s compassion on people. It’s not my job to accomplish His will. It is my responsibility to give my immediate “yes.” I want to be obedient by serving God with what He’s put inside me to do. No matter the cost, I have an earnest desire to reach others with the gospel. Now, and especially in difficult times, I want to be the person who is willing and obedient to share the hope we have in Jesus.

We often don’t realize how God can use our “yes.” Eugene Peterson refers to our obedience as continual discipleship, naming your “yes” as a “long obedience in the same direction.” God is on your side, and He’s coming after you. He’s relentless, even when you are running in the other direction. You are a part of God’s greater plan!

Not everyone is called to preach or teach, but we are all called to reach.

Gain God’s Truth: The gospel is still on the move today. That’s not only reassuring, but it’s mind-blowing that we all can be a part of the gospel ripple effect. The story of Jonah teaches us to look at obedience and faithfulness differently and to believe with a submissive and trusting spirit to take part in God’s incredible plan on this big wide earth. God will use your life to keep the gospel’s ripple effect going. Have courage and faith! It will boost your faithlessness.
