“Shadows” – We Are Messengers’ Darren Mulligan
When the sun shines on a tree, the tree casts a shadow. The shadow is not the tree; it’s something else.
I have spent so much of my life chasing things that God has made: things, people, places, feelings and ideals. These things are inherently beautiful because of their Creator and surely are a reflection of God. But they are simply not Him. I can run after these things without ever loving on the God who has made them all. I’m tired of chasing shadows.
“I don’t want to chase the shadows
I want the real thing
Not just a feeling
I won’t settle for anything less”
I want to know Jesus, and Jesus wants me to know Him intimately.
In John 17:3, Jesus, praying to His Father God, says that, “This is eternal life: that they would know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You sent.”
True satisfaction and salvation can only come through relationship with Jesus. The shadows can point us towards the actual person of Jesus, but they should never be the primary source or focus of our affections or desires. In order to have the real thing, we need to set our hearts and minds on Him alone, we must give Him our time, sit at His feet and hear His voice.
We should place our hopes in the Maker of all things, not in the things themselves. “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together,” Colossians 1:17.
