The Secret: How Do You See Love?Намуна
Dump Your Distraction
Written By: Dabney Hedegard
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”—Matthew 6:33 (NIV)
I remember the day I realized God was silent in my life. Being a church-attending gal since age 13, you’d think I would have clued in sooner. But here I was, far away from home, attending the college of my dreams when I reazlied what I had been missing all along. Faith-filled students walked the campus, worshiping the thing that mattered most: God.
Sadly, the thing I had worshiped was my high school sweetheart.
Once I started engaging in weekly Bible chapels, mission trips, and Christ-filled devotional studies, my passion I’d stuffed deep down inside was once again reignited. The day I decided to seek after God’s righteousness was the most freeing day of my life. I broke up with my long-time boyfriend who really wasn’t a spiritual leader, and swore off dating so I could realign my focus for Christ.
Reading today’s key verse seems simple. When I follow God, I become more like Him, and in turn have the potential to attract other Christ-focused individuals. This echoes the reaping and sowing principle found in Galatians 6:7—whatever I water, feed, and focus on will grow.
If our partner is not actively striving towards goodness and right-mindedness, this may be the diversion throwing us off course. Especially if we’re blinded by infatuation. We don’t see it. But mom and dad can. So can our best friend, if we’re brave enough to ask. Chances are they’ve probably dropped a few hints that this may not be the person that God has in store for you.
What if you knew that as soon as you closed the door on your distraction, Christ would open the door to the person He’s intended for you all along? The person you’ve prayed for, dreamed of, and planned to meet.
They’re out there.
That special someone.
Actually, they’re looking for you, too.
With every ounce of their soul, they want a spouse just like you. And what if they can’t dump their distraction until you dump yours?
The outside package will fade away leaving the inside stuff that you’ll either run alongside or one day run from. Seek God’s kingdom first, and then watch how the new righteous attraction walks your way. Remember, God promises when we seek His kingdom first, then all the things we desire—because now we desire what He desires—will be given to us.
DIG: What quality do you think attracts the right spouse?
DISCOVER: What if you knew it took a little effort and whole lot of faith on your part to say no to the tempting “good” and wait for the God-ordained “best” person possible? Ask three of your closest friends or relatives what they honestly think of your current boyfriend/girlfriend, and listen closely to what they say. Was it what you wanted to hear?
DISPLAY: Daily realigning your focus on God is the best way to attract a spiritual partner. This week, take your devotional time to a deeper level. Seek out a prayer group or weekly Bible study to plug into and see how the Holy Spirit guides you.
