The Secret: How Do You See Love?

DAY 6 OF 42

The Secret Ingredient

Written By: Danny Saavedra

“I will bless those who have humble and contrite hearts, who tremble at my word.”—Isaiah 66:2 (NLT)

If you were to run a Google search on attractive qualities, you’d definitely find some interesting stuff. According to ThoughtCatalog.com, bold confidence, being willing to call her on the phone, being a good dresser, being handy, protective, and chivalrous are a few things women find attractive in men. According to TheRichest.com, a high-pitched voice, red lipstick, big eyes, laughing at his jokes, and long arms—yes, you read that right—are among the things that make women scientifically more attractive to men.

If you notice, humility was nowhere to be found on either of these lists. What’s interesting about this is that humility is, in my opinion, the most important quality to the Lord. In his book, Humility, Andrew Murray wrote, “The highest glory of the creature is in being only a vessel, to receive and enjoy and show forth the glory of God. It can do this only as it is willing to be nothing in itself, that God may be all. Water always fills first the lowest places. The lower, the emptier a man lies before God, the speedier and the fuller will be the inflow of the diving glory.”

In Proverbs, we read that the Lord blesses the humble. The word we translate as humble is the Hebrew word ani, which means poor, lowly. It reminds me of what Jesus says in Matthew 5:3 (NIV): “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Guys and gals, if you’re wondering what, above all else, will make you more attractive, look no further than humility: more of God, less of yourself. You will never look, sound, and be more attractive than when you empty yourself of yourself and allow yourself to be filled by God. There is no other quality or trait you should strive more towards than this. And on top of that, this is the utmost quality you should look for in a future spouse.

So ask yourself: Are you living out humility? Have you decreased so that He may increase? When you look at others, how high on your list is humility?

DIG: Do a word search for wisdom on a Bible reference site.

DISCOVER: How can you apply what you find in your search to your marriage?

DISPLAY: If you’re married, sit with your spouse today and pray for the Lord’s wisdom upon your marriage. If you’re single, pray that the Lord pour His wisdom into you as you seek to build your foundation firmly upon Him.
