Walking With Jesus (Faith) Намуна
The Relay of Faith
In the past, Corinth used to hold a sporting event called the Isthmian. This match became the forerunner of the current Olympics. Many events were held. One sport that received attention at that time was athletics, and one of which was relay running. In this sport, each participant would line up at the starting line holding a torch. Few other runners would wait for him at various distances; one person at each distance.
As soon as the signal was sounded, the athletes would immediately run, carrying flaming torches. When the runner reached the next line, he would pass the torch to his partner and so on. The torch was transferred from one runner to another until the last runner reached the finish line. Based on this famous contest, the Greeks coined a proverb, "Let those who have the torch pass it on to the next."
The various genealogical lists in the Bible are the parts that are mostly avoided by us. We consider such passages to be dry, boring and have no clear meaning. The truth is, God certainly has a reason why He inspired this name list to the Bible writers and asked them to record it. These names represent the people who stood in their day. They had kept their faith in a match. Then, they ran holding the torch of their respective faith, and passed it on to the next generation. They were the ones who ensured that the light of truth remained burning from time to time, down to our current generations.
We are the runners who stand in that line right now. We have received the torch of faith from our parents. We have the responsibility to run by carrying the torch of faith and pass it on to generations after us, namely our children and grandchildren. Let us make sure that the generations after us will keep running to continue this relay of faith. Make sure that the truth doesn't stop in our time. Keep on teaching it and make sure that it stays on and shines for future generations.
Reflection:
1. Are you running with your torch of faith? Make sure you are doing so because the challenges of the generations after us will be even tougher.
2. What role can you take to carry your torch of faith to the finish line?
Application:
Truth is a precious heritage that is timeless and deserves to be passed on from generation to generation. Make sure that the truth is preserved in your life.
