Day 5 - Devotional Time and Meditation
Welcome to day 5 of making your devotional times the best that they can be. We hope that you’ve loved going deeper into the different ways that we can make our devotional times even better. Today, we are going to be looking at our devotional times and meditation.
Meditation seems to be such a huge part of our world today with millions of people meditating daily, but the way in which the world meditates is very different from the way that we should be meditating as Christians.
Meditating is defined as focusing one’s mind for a period of time and is often associated with clearing and/or emptying your mind as the end goal. As Christians, we should be meditating daily but instead of the end goal being to empty our minds, we should be aiming to fill it - with God!!
In Psalm 1.2, we see the Hebrew word “hagah” written by the author and translated as meditate. We can also translate this word to mean mutter or speak quietly. This is super cool for us as Christians because it means that we can be constantly meditating. We can be reading the bible to ourselves under our breath or singing along to worship music or simply praying to God. We get to meditate with God all of the time. Instead of us aiming to empty our minds of everything through meditation, we can be constantly trying to fill it with more of God.
Today’s devotional time - Take around 10-15 minutes (or more if you like!) and find a quiet place where you won’t be distracted. Start by praying to God and asking Him to be with you in your devotional time. Practice closing your eyes and focusing on God. Every time you feel yourself getting distracted or you find your thoughts wandering off, just reset and focus on God again. Read the Psalm on the next page a couple of times and see if God speaks to you. Make sure that you have something to write on if you think that He does. If He doesn’t, just keep meditating and focusing on Him. Don’t forget that meditating with God is something that we can do multiple times a day.
