1–2 Peter: A 10-Day Devotional Reading PlanНамуна
Humility
Following entails submitting to authority, which, as we’ve seen, can be very hard at times. For that reason, we aren’t likely to follow our leaders unless we humble our hearts. And for that reason, Peter offers encouragement from Proverbs 3:34, reminding us that “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (v. 5). God’s grace rests on those who follow his ways.
We can easily understand why Peter tells us to humble ourselves (5:6). What’s surprising is the way he tells us to do it—by casting our anxieties on God (5:7).
Reflection:
How do we practically cast our anxieties onto God, and how do you think this “casting” actually humbles us? In terms of your personal experience, have you seen your heart—and your life—change as a result of entrusting your troubles to God? If you haven’t yet practiced Peter’s principle here in 5:6–7, identify a current issue or circumstance in your life where you can begin.
