2 Samuel

DAY 20 OF 35

Let's be honest, these chapters in 2 Samuel are tough. We get a front-row seat to how our unchecked pursuit of personal gratification can cause serious damage. Ultimately, David and Amnon’s lack of self-control resulted in the rape of two women and the death of several people, including Amnon himself. Not only that, but these events are the trigger to several subsequent conflicts that led to David and his son’s fractured relationship. Eventually the kingdom of Israel will be split. WOW!

Sin has far-reaching consequences. It is easy to justify and convince ourselves that our decisions only affect us, but it simply isn’t true. It is true that we aren’t all members of a ruling family, but that doesn’t keep us from impacting others with our sin. Take some time to think through the people who are most directly impacted by decisions you make—positive and negative.

The wonderful truth is, that in Christ we have incredible victory over sin. We have been set free from our flesh and can walk in victory over sin (Roman 6).

Looking back at the Word

1. Skim back through these five chapters and take note of the people that bring God into their decisions. How does God interact with those characters?

2. As you look back over 2 Samuel 11-15, notice how the main players interact with God.

Questions to consider:

1. Who are the people that came to mind when you considered those impacted by your decisions?

2. Who is close enough to you to call you out on your sin and vice versa?

3. What areas of your life have you seen victory over sin struggles? Spend time thanking God for that victory.

4. Who could you tell about what you have learned this week? Make a plan to do this.

Let’s pray:

Father, you see me and are kind to me. Remind my heart of your grace and power in my life. I confess that I often just want things to go my way and according to my plans. Not my will, but yours, Lord!
