DAILY SCRIPTURE
“I am the vine; you are the branches.” (John 15:5a)
THE VINE AND ITS BRANCHES
The metaphor of us as branches attached to Jesus the vine is a picture of extreme connection, dependence and intimacy. It’s hard to think of a more vivid metaphor of the type of relationship God wants to have with us. Such devotion to Jesus means we can joyfully place him first in every area of our lives, prioritising our connection to him above all else.
The story of Mary and Martha from Luke 10 gives us insight into Jesus’ desire to connect with us. While Martha was distracted by the things that needed to be done, Mary “sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.” (See Luke 10:39.) Although Martha was upset at the lack of help from Mary, Jesus viewed the situation differently and said to Martha, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (See Luke 10:41-42.)
We can often feel like Martha - busy with things that need to be done, places we need to be and responsibilities that need to be taken care of. We would do well to take to heart Jesus’ conclusion in the Mary and Martha story.
Just as Jesus often withdrew to spend time with his Father, so we can choose to engage with God in our day to day lives as we prioritise our relationship with him. Like the branch receiving life and nourishment from the vine, so we receive the love, peace, presence and power of God as we focus our attention and affection on him. Then, with our connection to Jesus as our life’s foundation, his presence with us will naturally overflow in the way we live and interact with others, bringing wonderful Kingdom potential and possibilities.
Why not take a moment now to pause, take a deep breath, relax and connect with Jesus in a way that is personal to you, receiving all he has for you in this moment as you give your affection to him.
