Jesus In Red

DAY 2 OF 5

Blessed Poor

While it’s true that the physically poor heard Jesus gladly, what we see listed in the beatitudes are virtues of the godly. It is the poor in spirit who recognize that they need God’s grace and mercy. Those who are righteous in their own eyes see no need to repent and trust the Savior.

Those who are poor in spirit are blessed because they desperately need forgiveness. They see that they are immoral and have a depraved heart before God. When we are at the end of our rope morally, God steps in with a new rope of hope.

It is the moral Law that strips us of the delusion of self-righteousness. That’s why we need to apply the Ten Commandments to the conscience of the lost, as Jesus did (Mark 10:17–22). The Commandments will, by the grace of God, open the eyes of their understanding and show them their need for the Savior. And in their poverty, they will become rich and blessed.

Do I understand the poverty of my spiritual state without the Lord?

Father, thank you for the spiritual riches I have in Christ.

About this Plan

Jesus In Red

If anything in this life deserves our attention, it’s the powerful words of Jesus. Things in life that are red shock us: Fire trucks, stop signs, even blood. They stop us in our tracks and we pay attention to them. The words of Christ, often written in red ink in some bibles, should demand our attention as well. Experience God’s presence as you reflect on the awe-inspiring teachings of Christ.
