Day 1: Won’t Be Moved
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Matthew 7:24-25 (NIV)
Shortly after my beautiful bride and I got married, she started having car trouble. We ended up sharing a car for the next six months. To add insult to injury, I was layed off from my job and forced to file for unemployment. I started driving for Uber and Lyft just to make some extra cash. The only way I managed to stay afloat during these trials was by standing on the foundation I had built—the firm foundation of Christ.
During this discouraging season, I started reflecting on the foundation for my life. I grew up as a pastor’s kid. Those early years in church, where I first learned about Jesus, formed a strong foundation rooted in the truth of God’s Word. As I’ve grown in my faith, my relationship with God has grown deeper, and my foundation has grown stronger.
It makes me think about the story Jesus told in Matthew about the man who built his house on the sand. The foundation of his home wasn’t steady, so when the storms of life came, his house couldn’t withstand the force of the winds. But the man who built his house on the rock—on a sure foundation—he was the smart one. He built his house on a foundation strong enough to withstand any storm.
That’s what my song, “Won’t Be Moved,” is all about. The first verse says, “As the cold winds blow / Stronger than ever / Sometimes it shakes my soul / But I know that my feet’s on solid ground and I will not be moved.”
This has become my life’s motto. I might have a bad day, but I won’t be moved. Things might not be going my way, but I won’t be moved. My co-worker might be trying my patience, but I won’t be moved. I might be having money issues, but I won’t be moved.
You see, when you build your life on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ, you can withstand any storm life throws your way.
