LIVING BEYOND: What I Hear 

Despite what the world may say, I am a child of God. 

Names are something we have all learned to adapt and respond to. Our name helps us identify who we are and relate to those around us. Think about it. If someone tried to call you by a name other than the one you’ve been given, you probably wouldn’t respond. Yet so often, we respond to names that God never gave us. 

We live in a culture that tells us we have to perform our way to perfection. The pressure of a platform convinces us that our value comes from what we accomplish. We are identified by what we do or what we lack instead of who God says we are and who we were born to become. 

But God chooses to call us by a different name. Before He ever speaks to what we will do, He always speaks to who we are. He calls us chosen, beloved, highly favored, anointed for this time in history -- His masterpiece. What we do or what we don’t do does not define who we are. What we do is simply our response to who God calls us -- His children. 

When a child is born, parents have the legal right to name their child because they are the ones who gave him or her life. In the same way, God has given you a name that cannot be changed. 

Many people will try to call you by something other than your name, but you have the power to choose who you will respond to. As you read God’s Word today, remember He is speaking directly to you and He calls you His child.
