DAY 54 OF 82

JEREMIAH 38-39:
Yesterday we heard of persecution against Jeremiah, his being imprisoned so that he had his secretary, Baruch convey his messages, and then his being imprisoned in the dungeon at Jonathan’s house. And in today’s reading he is put in a muddy cistern.

PROVERBS 5:
Today’s chapter of Proverbs has a clear theme. Here is a verse from the middle that typifies that theme:

Prov. 5:15 NLT  Drink water from your own well—
share your love only with your wife.

1CORINTHIANS 14:
Today we read chapter 14 of 1st Corinthians, which gives Paul’s conclusions about spiritual gifts— the theme he started in chapter 12.

Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father, help us to do what Solomon said, to keep looking straight ahead with honest confidence. … Help us to avoid evil and walk straight ahead, not going one step off the right way.” Therefore, help us to keep our eyes on Christ. We find love perfected in Him. He showed us what love means when he laid down his life for us. He showed us perfect love because he died for us when we were his enemies. Thank you that Christ’s love is eternal. When we are impatient or unkind, show us Christ. When we are jealous or conceited, show us Christ. When we are selfish, irritable, and impolite, show us Christ. When we give up on people, show us Christ. Help us to grow ever more mature in Christ, so that our love may be more like his. Show us that love— simple and pure love— outshines spiritual gifts. May we love all those you love, that there may be unity among us and so that we may become more like Christ.
