Easter: Beyond The Bunny

DAY 2 OF 6

The Last Supper

Before Jesus died He knew that it would be the last time He would ever have a meal with His 12 apostles. They were some of his closest friends in the world. That last meal they shared is now known as the Last Supper. During this supper, He explained how His death on the cross was His way of taking the punishment for our sin. That way, anyone who chooses to believe in Him as their savior, can have forgiveness, inner peace and later live with Him in heaven forever. Mark 14 explains, as they were all eating, Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to his apostles, saying, ‘Take it; this is my body.’  Then He took a cup, and when He had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.  ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,’ He said to them.  ‘Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.’

Although the apostles did not clearly understand all the words spoken, Jesus was explaining that his body would be broken and his blood would be shed during the crucifixion. He wanted them to meet often to celebrate what His death symbolized. When Christians gather together even today, a great way to remember the sacrifice Jesus made for us is to eat a small piece of bread and drink from a cup.  We call this act "communion." Churches all over the world honor this tradition. Easter is a great time to gather with Christian friends and family to remember what Jesus did for us.
