Lent Through African Eyes

DAY 11 OF 45

The Sin that Separates

Sin that separates us from God and divides us from one another. The cost of reconciling these relationships was Jesus’ own blood.

From an Africa Study Bible proverbs and stories note:

A Yoruba proverb says, Ebo die die lo ngba alaiku la, meaning, “A little sacrifice saves the dying from death.” People who follow the traditional Yoruba religion in Nigeria believe that a sacrifice has the power to save from death or to avert evil.

For the people of Israel, the reason for the sin offering was very different from both traditional African and ancient pagan beliefs. The sin offering described in Leviticus 4–5 was for the purpose of receiving forgiveness for sins committed against the Lord. The sin offering brought the sinner into a right relationship with God. Sacrifice does not atone a spirit’s thirst for blood. Instead, blood is shed to atone for our sin that has separated us from God.

Today:

Sing a song praising and thanking Jesus for his sacrifice on the cross to forgive our sins.

About this Plan

Lent Through African Eyes

Africans throughout history have shaped Christian thought and contemplative practice. Starting Ash Wednesday, explore the Lenten themes of prayer, fasting, repentance, and alms-giving. Sojourn with Jesus’ disciples from his baptism to Holy Week. Abide with him in temptation. Hear the crowd shout—celebrating, then condemning. Watch Simon of Cyrene carry the cross. Witness the crucifixion with Mary. Join a biblical pilgrimage to prepare your heart for Jesus’ passion and resurrection.
