A Godly Life

DAY 14 OF 21

Jesus is goodness Thirty miles northeast of Mexico City lie the great pyramids of Teotihuacan. The temples at the top were sites of great religious intensity and sometimes featured human sacrifice. Victims were decapitated or had their hearts cut out to propitiate one of the eight major gods and goddesses. Favor from the gods had to be bought by human effort. The Bible tells us that favor with God was indeed bought with blood, but it was the blood of God himself that was shed for us. The Bible also tells us that a God who would make that ultimate gift must care for us deeply and will give us the smaller things we need as well. What do you suppose was Jesus’ first miracle? Not a dramatic healing or resurrection. He rescued a bridal couple from the embarrassment of running out of wine at their reception. “Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’; so they filled them to the brim. . . . ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.’ They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine” (John 2:7-9). Here you see what Jesus thinks of us. He likes us! He likes to help us in big and little ways. He exerts his omnipotence on our behalf. He is full of goodness to us!
