Let’s talk about leadership. There is not a single mention of a leadership title in this passage, but there is no question that this woman is a leader. How can I say that? Because leadership is about character, not about position. 

Consider: Leaders go first

Leadership expert John C Maxwell tells us that: “leadership isn’t about titles, positions or flowcharts. It’s about one life influencing another.” And if leadership is about influence, then that means that there can be good leadership and bad leadership. 

Leaders go first. Leaders set the temperature. Leaders are willing to sacrifice and deny themselves. Leaders are disciplined. Leaders ask for and use God’s wisdom. Leaders know the difference between ambition and vision. Leaders are kind. Leadership oozes from this woman. From the way she serves her family, to her attitude towards her work. From the way in which she stewards her finances and resources to the character that she has forged. She doesn’t need a title or position because her character speaks for itself.

Context: Why bother?

Maybe you hold a leadership position. Maybe you don’t. Guess what? God isn’t impressed by your titles. Truth. He’s interested in your heart and your character. 

We’re all called to be leaders. In our families. In our offices. In our colleges. In our homes. In our communities. There is leadership in you that you haven’t even discovered yet. But it’s there. And in the hands of God, it’s dynamite.

• What state is your character in right now? What one thing can you put into practice this week to become more like Jesus and ultimately a better leader?
