Memory Verse: Say Psalm 51:2 three times.
Can You See It?
Today’s story is entitled, the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant, and is found in Matthew 18:21-35. Peter asked Jesus, “How many times should we forgive someone who sins against us, up to seven times?” Jesus replied, “Seventy times seven,” and began to tell another story.
There once was a king who called his servants to have them say what they owed him. One servant in particular owed the king a huge amount of money, which he could never repay in his entire lifetime. The king said, “I am going to sell you and your family as slaves in order to pay back the money you owe me.” The man cried out, “No, please, please don’t do that to my family.” Because the king was a kind man and felt compassion for his servant he said, “I release you—you are free of all debt!”
Do you know what that very same servant did? He went and found his servant that owed him a tiny amount of money and threatened him. He yelled, “If you don’t pay me every penny you owe I will throw you in jail.” The servant begged, “Please be patient with me. I beg you for mercy!” But the man had a cruel heart and showed no mercy. Instead he put him in jail.
It wasn’t long before the king found out what his servant had done. He became very angry. “You wicked servant! I forgave you the huge debt because you begged me. Why didn’t you show that same compassion to your servant?” And the king threw him into prison to be punished until the money he owed him could be repaid.
In this story, Jesus gave a very strong warning that if we do not forgive others, he will not forgive us.
Can You Do It?
Repent of your sins every day. Ask God to wash you clean, and make you white as snow. Psalm 51 is a wonderful prayer of repentance you can pray each day.
Ask God to help you not sin.
Always be ready and willing to forgive others.
Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for loving me and making me one of your children. Help me love and obey you. Help me love others the way you love me. I am sorry for my sins. Wash me clean.
