Trusting God

In Genk (Belgium), "Our Children’s Home" has provided a temporary home for many decades for children and teenagers from problematic living situations.

In the early years, this was done entirely on a faith basis, meaning that they depended almost entirely on donations for income. It sometimes happened that the flow of donations dried up, and there was insufficient money to buy food to feed the children.

One day, for instance, there was no bread for breakfast. Yet the aunts (the leaders) told the children to come to the table. It was set with empty plates and bread baskets. Auntie Rie opened the prayer: "Lord God, we thank You that You know what we need, and we thank You for the bread that is about to come."

She had hardly said "Amen" when the doorbell rang. On the pavement were baskets full of loaves, rolls, and coffee cakes. The aunts brought in the baskets with tears in their eyes. For the children, this was only natural. They had been prayed for, hadn't they?

This true story has happened many times across the world. In "Our Children's Home", it was by no means the only miracle of provision they experienced. Yet it is surprising and encouraging every time. Just as God provided the people of Israel with manna and quails during their journey through the desert, He provides for our daily needs. Jesus taught us to pray for that so that we can thank God when there is bread again and realize that it is through His provision that we receive it.

Having a fixed salary is excellent as long as we realize that this is God's provision for our sustenance. Remember, the Lord is my Provider and not my employer!

What does it mean for you to trust the Lord for the necessities of life?
