It’s All About Who You Know

God Uses Common Connections for Uncommon Results

You’ve heard the expression, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” It’s often used as an excuse or explanation for when life does not play out the way we anticipate. Maybe you were passed over for a promotion or overlooked when event invitations were sent out. It’s natural to focus on the connections we don’t have and forget the ones we do have.

Moses had connections, and each one played a trivial role in his destiny. Some of them had impressive economic/social status, while others ate at the bottom of the barrel. God used Miriam, Moses’ sister to look out for him as he floated down the river in a basket as an infant. God used Pharaoh’s daughter to raise him. God used Aaron, Moses’ brother to be his spokesperson. God always puts people around us to help move us toward our destiny. In Moses’ case, he used his own family and even his enemies to propel him toward his potential.

I remember being a young basketball player looking to get picked up by a college and feeling disappointed when I was passed over. I am shorter than the average height of most basketball stars. But there were a few coaches who saw what I had to offer and cultivated it. Rather than be discouraged by those who didn’t give me the time of day, I chose to lean into those who believed in me. If you steward your common connections well, you will experience uncommon results!

Maximizing your common connections requires wisdom. It’s tempting to only listen to those telling you what you want to hear and discount the wisdom of those telling you what you need to hear. Proverbs reminds us that honest correction from a friend is valuable (Proverbs 27:6). Give the people in your life who have noble intentions permission to speak into your life and help you to become who God created you to be.

Take some time to read today’s scriptures and reflect on the common connections that you are neglecting. Think of the people God has placed around you at work, home, school, or church. How can you intentionally serve them? Are there people you have overlooked or discounted? What connections do you have at your disposal that God can use to take you further toward your potential?
