Jesus’ Water Works! Devotions from Time of GraceSmakprov
Thirsty?
Have you ever wondered why it’s so hard to be satisfied? If you’re like me, living in a prosperous country, you have/own/enjoy more blessings than 99 percent of human beings in history. Yet it is so easy to feel bored, empty, and aching for more. Why is that?
God knows the answer. “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water” (Jeremiah 2:13). Why do our souls feel so thirsty for more? Because we’ve forgotten God, the spring of living water, and turned to someone or something else to satisfy. But no matter how many dollars you make, how many trips you take, or how many rounds of golf you play, it’s not enough to fill that desire in your heart. Those are “broken cisterns.”
Thankfully, God is still giving away living water. We can come to Jesus today and find eternal life in his name. We can find a gushing source of love that never runs dry, a mercy that bubbles up new every morning, and a grace that endures forever.
Recently, the man who sold Minecraft, the popular video game, for $2.5 billion dollars admitted that his mansion, champagne, and celebrity friends didn’t cure his loneliness. His story reminds us that even the biggest “cisterns” on earth are broken. Praise God that we have something better in Jesus, a spring of living water that never runs dry and can always satisfy our souls.
