Leaders Communicate Clearly
“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to respond.” - Stephen R. Covey
One of the most important leadership qualities is the ability to communicate. James expresses the power of the tongue in James 3:1-5. He compares the tongue to a horse’s bit, which goes into the horse’s mouth and can control the direction of the horse’s whole body. James also reminds us to be slow to speak and slow to anger (James 1:19). A leader must be able to listen before he responds (Proverbs 18:13). Be very careful about what words you use. Based on how you speak, you can stir up anger or end the conversation (Proverbs 15:1).
Having hard conversations has been the most challenging part of leadership at work and in the church. Matthew 18:15-17 is a helpful guide for these conversations. These verses specifically explain how to handle sin, but I also use this system when handling conflict at work.
For example, cancellations are the most common concern in my line of work. If I have a problem with a parent canceling, I handle it with them one-on-one. If they continue to have cancellation issues after a formal conversation, I bring in a supervisor. If problems persist after this, concerns will most likely be brought to the admin team and the company’s boss. While cancellations aren’t a sin, this method is helpful in almost any situation.
Furthermore, communication can be difficult in high-stress situations. I know I have come across as snappy or harsh when I didn’t mean it! It is better to take the time to listen to those you are leading. Then, think over what they are saying before responding. Once you have made a decision that you are confident in, communicate it to your team. If you aren’t sure if you’ve been clear, ask them! By following this process, you can communicate clearly and effectively!

Action Step: Reach out to someone who you trust to give you honest feedback. Ask him to give his honest feedback on your ability to communicate clearly.
