Who Is Your Person?

Who is your person or people? When life throws you an unexpected curveball, who do you call? When your stress level reaches maximum capacity, who do you trust to make everything better? Do you rely on your husband to fix your problems? Are your parents the ones you cling to in tough times? Maybe you turn to your friends to help you figure out the next steps in a crisis. Is your go-to person your small group leader or pastor? Is it a neighbor or coworker? Maybe it’s one of your kids or your favorite aunt, or maybe it’s another family member altogether. Think about who you trust above all else.

The psalmist in today’s scripture reveals that his person is God. When pushed to the wall with troubles, he cries out only for the Lord’s help. He doesn’t phone a friend or run to someone else. He prays and expects the Lord to respond in the right way and at the right time. The reality is that there’s no substitute for God’s help—no one is more qualified to meet the complex needs we experience when faced with big challenges.

His response will supernaturally melt away our fear and make space for our faith to rise up. His presence will make us feel safe and secure, giving us the confidence to stay strong rather than cower. What’s more, surrendering our every fear to God will embolden us in significant ways. It will remind us that He alone is our champion.

What needs to change in your life so that the Lord in heaven is your person and not anyone here? Where do you need to readjust your priorities so you’re more focused on Him as your Savior alone? Friend, God created community to help support us as we journey through life together. Our family members and friends play a vital role in our lives! But when we look to them above Him, something isn’t right. Ask the Lord to make you a courageous woman of God who deeply appreciates friends and family, but is ultimately most dependent on Jesus for everything she needs.
