Scripture
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16
Summary
When we lead the church in song we are actually teaching them God's word. We are helping "the Word of Christ dwell in them richly". Memorizing songs is the best way to press Scripture deep down into people's hearts. Most people won't remember the sermon after a few days...but they'll remember a song for the rest of their life. By singing Biblically-saturated songs we are forming people's souls. We are helping them carry God's word with them...which in turn will carry them through their deepest, darkest valleys. We may not feel like it, but we are all actually Bible teachers!
Discussion Questions
1. James 3:1 says teachers will be judged more strictly. How might this apply to us?
2. Are there specific songs that have helped carry you through hard times? Share.
3. Are there any songs we are singing at our church that are Biblically "light" or inaccurate? 4. Any other thoughts, comments, ideas or questions you'd like to share?
Closing Prayer
Lord God, thank you for the incredible privilege we have of shepherding your church. Thank you that you have chosen us to help teach the church each week as we lead them in song. Press your word deep into our people's hearts, so that they might remember you in the midst of their trials. Let your word bear fruit in each of our lives. Help us to sing songs that represent you rightly, and that glorify your name. We ask in Jesus' name. Amen.
