More Than Just Love: A Devotional for Parents

DAY 5 OF 7

Perseverance

Let’s talk about feeling spiritually tired. Before becoming a parent, I really wasn’t a ‘weeper.’ Sure – I’ve cried, but truly weeping was something I gained in parenthood. When you go through challenges with your children, and do the work day in and day out, it’s hard to not become spiritually tired.

Each time your child faces adversity, or you feel like you can’t stretch yourself even thinner, the reality is these things will keep happening. The work sometimes feels like it’ll never be done. And truthfully, until Jesus returns, the work is never done. While sin is still present in our world, the work is never done.

One of my biggest concerns as a parent is becoming weary and feeling hopeless. But God seems to keep giving me a pep talk with reminders of the two verses for today.

Don’t lose heart in doing good! Good will happen. I desperately need to hear this at times. I need to be reminded God is in the business of doing good! Just remembering He is good takes the pressure off of me and puts it on Him.

I also love how Isaiah 40:31 talks about waiting on the Lord. Have you seen an eagle fly? They fly as if they own the sky and rule it. As a follower of Christ, we know who rules the world – Jesus! He’s our strength and with Him – only with Him – can we do the work we’re called to as parents.

Take time to fill your spirit with His promises and truths, spending time in prayer and conversations with Him and taking the time to be still and rest in the truth that He is God (Psalm 46:10).

Today, write down areas where your spirit may feel weary. It might be trying to handle your child’s behavior, waiting for test results, or just wrestling with the day-to-day reality of being a family.

Daily challenge: Pray God will renew your spirit in these areas and ask Him to show you his goodness.
