No More "Little" Sins
You know the story well. God’s angels urge Lot and his family to flee from Sodom and Gomorrah because the Lord is going to destroy the city with fire and brimstone—but what does Lot do? He lingers. He stays in Sin City, until the angels must physically drag him and his family out of danger, warning him to run to the mountains for safety. In order to escape the coming judgment, the angels urge Lot to get himself and his family up to the mountains—up, out of, and away from the danger zone. But Lot suggests a compromise. Instead of running a million miles away from Sodom, he reasons, Why can’t we go and settle in that tiny, little, harmless city called Zoar? It’s only a stone’s throw away from where we used to live, and after all, no one likes change.
It’s easy to be comfortable in sin, isn’t it? Our lifestyle for years has revolved around this besetting sin. Just as Lot was so attached to Sodom, our habits, routines, and affections might be attached to a place, a situation, or even a person. And yet instead of totally denouncing sin and getting as far away from the evil that God hates, we trade on the mercy of the Lord and say, “Is it really that bad?”
I don’t know what compromise looks like in your life. Perhaps social media is the gateway drug into your Internet addiction. Perhaps some of your friends lead you into sin, or maybe there’s a place you know that is just plain bad for your soul. Whatever the “little one” is in your life, don’t hang around it any longer. Obey God and run to the mountain.
