The Truth of the Word of God, written by Geoff Hopkins
Have you ever driven down a road and afterward had no recollection of driving it? It can be the same when reading the Bible: you might read the words on the page, but they don’t register. This is a sure sign that our mind is somewhere else. Often we allow the competing thoughts of our busy world to invade every part of our lives - even our time with God.
James 1:22 says we are not to just listen to the Word but do what it says! However, before we can do what the Bible says, we must first learn to allow the Word of God to penetrate our hearts, mind & soul.
The psalmist says in Psalms 119:11, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” We need to allow the Word of God into our hearts so that obedience to God becomes second nature. These are the steps to becoming more like Christ.
The best book in the world is the Bible, and the best place to put it is in your heart.
With so much vying for our attention, how do we make the most of the time we have in God’s Word and allow the truth of God to truly impact our lives?
I have 3 steps that help me:
1. Be Realistic.
Have realistic expectations. It is better to achieve spending 5 minutes every day in God’s Word than trying to spend an hour and failing after the first day. Set yourself up for a win.
2. Set a Routine. Commit to the same time every day and go to the same place. Over time, it will become a habit. And habits grow.
3. Rest in His presence. Stop, breathe, and give God your focus. Read and allow the words to penetrate your heart, mind, and soul.
The Bible is the true Word of God. In John 17:17(NLT), Jesus prayed, “Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.” If we want to know the truth, we must look at God’s Word. When we look at the Bible, we see the truth. The Bible does not merely contain the truth; it is the truth.
In any and every situation and circumstance, reach for your Bible: the true Word of God. Never underestimate how God knows what you need and how he will speak to you through His Word. As you start to see God work in your life through the small steps you have taken to be intentional with Him, you’ll start to make more time to be in His presence.
- How will you prioritise time today to spend with God?
- What are the truths God is speaking specifically to you about?
