Unmasked - Dare to Be the Real You

DAY 6 OF 12

DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE

The sad reality of perfectionism is that it is never satisfied; yet, so often, we get drawn in by this unmeetable standard. Having a desire to improve is great, but there is no such thing as "perfect". Perfectionism draws an ever moving, expanding finish line, one that we will never be able to reach.

For Christians, we can be particularly susceptible to perfectionism. Often we can mistake it for spiritual virtue. Perfectionism's obsession with control and flawless performance can be transposed into our relationship with God. It draws us into the lie that we can earn God’s love and perform our way towards God’s affections. While I am a big believer in striving for excellence in all that we do, it shouldn’t be detrimental to our peace, satisfaction, and life-fulfillment - that’s when our perfectionist tendencies need to be removed.

I’ve found three simple keys in my life that can curb perfectionist tendencies:

  1. Walk with God - be in His presence daily.
  2. Work with God - be in partnership with Him.
  3. Watch with God - gain His perspective.

In Christ, we are truly free! God is calling us to the wonderfully refreshing experience of getting our eyes off of ourselves and how we’re measuring up, and getting them onto Jesus. He wants us to stop pursuing and being paralyzed by perfectionism so that we are free to pursue love and to pursue trusting Him with every fiber of our being.

We are free to follow Jesus imperfectly.

TAKEAWAYS

Distinguish between perfection and excellence.

God never demanded perfection, only excellence and availability.

Identify the root cause of your desire for perfection, and deal with it.

DECLARATIONS

Heavenly Father, I choose to take off the mask of perfectionism. I want to learn to be content in all situations and circumstances and to be at peace, aware that You are in control of all things and that the world doesn’t rest on my shoulders. I give You my perfectionist tendencies and receive the truth that I can rest in Your grace as a much-loved child of God. I take off this mask, and I put on Your acceptance, affirmation, and acknowledgment of me. Amen.

REFLECTIONS

Why are you striving for excellence and in what areas?

What is God saying to you about walking, working and watching with Him?

How can you see your progress over your mistakes?

About this Plan

Unmasked - Dare to Be the Real You

A war is taking place over our identity. It has stopped us from living authentic, vulnerable, transparent lives and is robbing us of fullness of life. We wear masks that cover the truth - we are created in God's likeness and image. He has paid for us to be equipped with love, peace, joy, and security. Let's lose the masks and discover who God created us to be.
