The Heart Attitudes: Part 4Chikamu
Heart Attitude #3 – Give and Receive Scriptural Correction
Proverbs 15:10, “Discipline is harsh for the one who leaves the path; the one who hates correction will die."
Proverbs 15:12, “A mocker doesn’t love one who corrects him; he will not consult the wise.”
Proverbs 14:12, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.”
Harold Bullock often says and has written that we all do what makes sense to us. The decisions others make may seem foolish to us, but to the person who made it, it made perfect sense in the moment. Some of those “sensible” decisions have disastrous consequences.
That is why we need friends, real friends, to give us scriptural correction. The decision that makes sense to us in the moment may just be the beginning of the path to the end of our life. We can feel really good about a bad decision. A faithful friend will call us out before allowing us to make a foolish choice.
Do not be fooled by people applauding your decisions. Your enemy would applaud the very thing that will bring your demise. Also people who do not share your Christian values or worldview might encourage your wrong choices just because they do not know the better one.
Sometimes God uses people in authority to give you scriptural correction like teachers, police officers, and pastors. More often He uses folks who are already in relationship with you to do so like, parents or peers. The real question is whether we are willing to listen to them.
Proverbs 19:20 reminds us to listen to counsel and receive instruction so that we may be wise later in life. Receiving scriptural correction is a part of that wisdom instruction. Are you open to hearing it?
