“Living Word”

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1, NIV)

Have you ever been at a crossroads where you weren’t sure which path to take? Have you ever prayed that God would give you a sign? Sometimes while we’re busy looking for a burning bush, the answer is often right in front of us…hidden within the pages of God’s Word.

The Bible is so much more than a collection of old stories passed down through time. It’s a blueprint for our lives — a living, breathing reminder that God speaks. Hebrews 4:12 (NLT) says, “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.”

The Word not only serves as a compass for our lives, but it also keeps us on the path of righteousness, steering us back to God’s will when we wander from the road He’s prepared for us.

I will stand on the truth in the living Word of God / ‘Cause every time it moves my soul and shapes my every thought / It’s alive in me, the very breath I breathe

While our salvation is not dependent on how consistently we have a daily quiet time, our spiritual growth is directly proportionate to the time we spend in the Word. The best way to get to know Christ is to spend time with Him, and the best way to do that is through prayer and intentional time spent seeking His words in His Word.

Ironically, God often chooses to speak to us through storytelling in His Word. The characters are a lot like you and me—broken, sinful, jealous; and yet, redeemed by a beautiful God. The more you read, the more you’ll find that through the stories of people like Abraham, Noah, Moses, Ruth, Mary, Paul and other ordinary figures like them, God is telling a larger, overarching story of pure love.

His gentle instruction is the fuel we need to tackle life’s decisions, both big and small. Psalm 119:105 (NIV) reminds us, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” God’s Word protects us. It’s the sword of the Spirit. God’s Word equally gives voice to our praise, and it’s the very sustenance that gives us strength to keep fighting when we’re tempted to compromise.
