Waiting at the Window
When Richard leaves for work in the morning, Clay and Caleb immediately stop what they are doing, run to his side, and give him a hug. Then they run to the front window, press their little hands against the glass, and wait for Richard to pull his truck out of the driveway. When Richard reaches the portion of the road directly in front of their window, he pauses just long enough to wave to the boys. Very excitedly, the boys wave back, shouting, "Bye bye, Dada. We love you."
Unfortunately, there are days when Richard forgets to stop. I see the sadness on the boys' faces as they watch their daddy drive by. "Dada didn't stop!" they cry. I will immediately call Richard on his cell phone and, if I can reach him, he will turn around and come back. After stopping for a quick moment, he once again heads off to work and the boys are happy and ready to resume their day. My boys need that special window time with their dad. They need to witness his love.
There are also times when, for one reason or another, Richard comes to a stop in front on the window, and the boys are not there. No smiling little faces. No tiny hands waving, no voices saying, "I love you, Dad" or "Have a good day." Richard loves Clay and Caleb so much. He treasures the precious moments he shares with them, no matter how big or how small. When they are not there, his day is less complete. He misses the joy their window time brings.
Watching this interaction between my boys and Richard exemplifies our interaction with our heavenly Father. God has given us the most wonderful gift, the gift of prayer. Just as the boys wait at the window for Richard to stop on the road, God waits patiently, hoping we will come to him. He wants to wave at us each morning and tell us how much he loves us. He wants to guide us and encourage us and help us meet our needs. Unlike Richard, who may sometimes forget to stop, God will never forget. God's window is always open.
Do you run to God every morning, open the window, and pour out your heart to him? Do you tell him each day how much you love him? Do you listen and give him an opportunity to share his love for you? Or, do you leave our Lord paused on the side of the road, watching and wishing you were there? Take time to be with God every day. Don't leave him waiting for you. Don't miss out on the joy, peace, and comfort he wants to give you. And don't miss out on the joy you can give him. His hands are waving. Are you ready to wave back?
