What Do Christians Believe?

DAY 3 OF 19

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19)

The first thing we confess about the one true God is that He is the Father. This statement is not primarily about our relationship to God, Him being our heavenly Father, although this is also true.

The Bible speaks about the one God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All three are mentioned in the creed, with some important facts about each of them. The creed does not define or explain the concept of trinity. God is one. At the same time, God is Father, Son, and Spirit. That we know for sure. We can come up with philosophical ideas trying to understand this, but these will always be limited and fallible. The complexity and beauty of God’s being surpass our understanding.

The doctrine of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit often leads to misunderstanding or ridicule among non-christians. Many believers also struggle with this mind blowing concept. But God reveals Himself this way in the Bible. It is essential for Who He is. And thus it is at the basis of the Christian faith.

God reveals Himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Which role does this play in your image of God?

About this Plan

What Do Christians Believe?

In 2025, the worldwide church celebrates the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, an assembly representing all of Christendom. At this council, people tried to state and affirm the Christian faith in the triune God. This reading plan studies the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed to see what Christians throughout history have confirmed to be the core of their faith.
