What Do Christians Believe?

DAY 1 OF 19

We believe…

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” (Romans 10:9)

Faith is a key concept in the Bible. We are called to believe in our heart and to confess the truth. But in order to do so, we need to know what to believe.

The Bible teaches us everything we need to know about God, about the world, and about ourselves. However, very early on in church history, people felt the need to summarize the basic teachings of the Bible in a clear and concise way. These ‘statements of faith’ or ‘creeds’ were shared among believers to confirm their identity as Christians, to phrase the key truths everybody should believe, and at the same time to correct or contradict false teachings. These creeds were not directly given by God and thus don’t have absolute authority, but they can be helpful to understand what the Christian faith is about.

In the year 321, there was a large assembly held in Nicaea, and in 381, another one in Constantinople. These assemblies officially accepted a statement of belief. They represented all churches, which makes this document a summary of what (almost) all Christians worldwide and throughout history believe and confess. Over the coming days, let’s study this creed in detail!

How much importance do you attach to ‘believing the right thing’? If you were to write a creed, what would you put in?

About this Plan

What Do Christians Believe?

In 2025, the worldwide church celebrates the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, an assembly representing all of Christendom. At this council, people tried to state and affirm the Christian faith in the triune God. This reading plan studies the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed to see what Christians throughout history have confirmed to be the core of their faith.
