DAY 3 OF 30

God’s Math Equation

By Callie Pirtle

And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. —Acts 2:42-47 (NIV emphasis added)

Let’s take a moment to consider a simple equation that holds profound spiritual significance:

D + C = A

Devotion + Communion = Addition

Take a deep breath and don’t worry—this isn’t about math. Rather it’s an invitation to a deeper, richer relationship with God. This spiritual equation carries the potential to transform not just our understanding but our entire way of living.

Devotion: Supernatural Commitment
First, let’s consider devotion. It’s more than occasional Bible reading or praying when life feels overwhelming. True devotion is placing God at the very center of your existence—above your job, your ambitions, and even your comforts. It’s the kind of commitment that drives you to seek Him first in everything.

In the book of Acts, we see how the early believers were so deeply impacted by the gift of the Holy Spirit that their priorities were completely reoriented. They didn’t merely fit God into their schedules; they made Him the very foundation of their lives. Love, prayer, and fellowship became the heartbeat of their existence.

Communion: Supernatural Selflessness
Next, we turn to communion—not only the ritual of bread and wine but the daily practice of life together. The early Church modeled a radical generosity, sharing not only their possessions but their very lives with one another. They sold what they had, gave to those in need, and lived with a supernatural sense of unity and purpose. In this communion they reflected the heart of Jesus—a heart that always puts others first.

This kind of communal living wasn’t a mere obligation, it was an overflow of grace. Their meals were shared with joy and gratitude, and their lives reflected the beauty of a selfless, Christ-centered community. This new way of living had a miraculous outcome.

Addition: Supernatural Increase
Finally comes the divine result: addition. Our Scripture reading for today tells us the Lord added to their number every day. Their devotion to God and their communion with one another drew people in like never before. It wasn’t flashy or formulaic; it was the natural fruit of lives fully surrendered to Christ and one another. It was miraculous!

This is the kind of growth only the Holy Spirit can bring—a multiplication that springs from genuine faith, devotion, and love.

D + C = A
So, where do you stand in this equation? Are you truly devoted to Jesus, or is He a distant priority in your life? Have you embraced the fullness of communion—not just attending services but fully engaging in the life of the church and the needs of other believers?

Today is the perfect day to recommit. Set aside your distractions, refocus your heart on God, and open yourself to the work He wants to do in and through you. Join in the life of the community through service, fellowship, or simply being present with others.

As you walk in devotion and communion, be prepared for the miraculous addition that follows. God’s kingdom grows when His people are wholeheartedly invested in both Him and each other. And as you commit yourself to this divine calling, you may find your life enriched in ways you never imagined! You may discover new friendships, deeper joy, and even a renewed passion for God’s Church and His work.

Together let’s follow Jesus’ formula with faithfulness and selflessness and anticipate the miraculous!

Prayer

Father, help me turn from everything that’s not of You and competing for my attention. I turn to You, my God, and recommit my devotion to You and You alone. Help me serve others like Jesus has called me to and increase my communion with believers today and every day. Thank You, Lord, for the miracles You’re going to do in my life and the life of Your Church. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activation

  • Take a moment to honestly consider your relationship with the Lord. What does your devotion look like? Ask the Lord to help you continue to seek Him above all else.
  • List ways that love, prayer, and fellowship with other believers are part of your life. Then ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the areas that may need more focus.
  • If you’re not already in a small group, find one and get connected!
  • Do you have a place where you serve or volunteer? Maybe your church? Your community? Your kids’ school? Wherever it is, ask God to help you serve others like Jesus would.
