The Purpose of Christmas

DAY 9 OF 15

Have you ever had to guard something? Hold something close? Maybe it was an important possession you kept under lock and key, or a sensitive secret for a loved one you held private, or a diagnosis you didn’t want anyone to know about just yet. Whatever it was, you know that when you’re guarding something, it means that you’re protecting it. You’re watching out for it. You’re keeping it safe and protected. In the same way, God promises to guard our hearts and minds with peace.

In a world where that feels seemingly impossible, God’s heart for us on display at Christmas is love. And out of that love, God offers to cover us in peace. To protect us with a peace that will cover any and all situations. In a season where so many things can keep us on edge, filled with worry, or struggling to make sense of the moments we’re in, it’s important to remember that the purpose of Christmas was to show us God’s heart for us. It was to show us that God came to make peace possible, not just for us, but for the world as a whole. And because of that, we can always turn to God for help in guarding and protecting our hearts and minds.

This week, work on memorizing this verse so that you can remember God’s promise of peace not just at Christmas, but every day you need it.

That’s why, in this devotional, we’ll work to cut through the noise and discover the real meaning behind the season. We’ll look at what brings real joy and purpose in this holiday. We’ll unpack the incredible story behind the birth of Jesus Himself to understand what the purpose of Christmas really is.
