How to Make First Dates Less Awkward and More Fruitful

DAY 3 OF 5

Day 3: Be Present

“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” - James 1:19

While it can be really helpful to have some conversation starters ready to make sure you get the most out of your first date, it’s equally important to stay present in the moment.

Feeling heard is an amazing feeling. So, when your date is talking, make sure to listen. Don’t just think about what you’re going to say next. Don’t look at your phone! Put it away so you can focus on the person in front of you. Your body language also says a lot. Make eye contact, nod your head, and smile to show that you are interested in what they are saying.

Being present means giving your full attention to the other person. When you do this, it shows that you care about them and what they have to say. It can help you connect on a deeper level. You not only hear their words but also understand their feelings and thoughts — all of which is important to see if you have a deeper connection.

If you’re too busy thinking about what you want to say next, you might miss something important. Sometimes, being slow to speak can help you catch things you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. And remember, conversations aren’t competitions. It’s not about who has the best story but about sharing time together.

When you stay present, you also follow God's teaching. God wants us to be loving and kind. By being a good listener, you show your date that you value them and their opinions. This can make your first date very special.

So, the next time you go on a date, remember James 1:19. Be quick to listen and slow to speak. Put your phone away. Look into their eyes and listen to what they have to say. You may find that being present makes all the difference.
