Anatomy of the Gospel - Back to the Basics

DAY 5 OF 5

Identification

"We are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:26 NKJV.

Salvation bestows a new identity upon the believer. We identify as sons of God through Jesus Christ. In the scripture below we will see this identification in types and shadows of the Old Testament revealed through the lens of the gospel.

"[18] And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son? [19] And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me. [20] And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me." Genesis 27:18-20 KJV

In Genesis 27: 1-29, Jacob and Esau represent shadows of Jesus Christ and Adam, while Rebecca and Isaac represent shadows of the Holy Spirit and God. In this story, Isaac (God) wanted to give out his blessing to his first son (Adam by creation, Jesus Christ by divination). After informing Esau (Adam) to prepare a meal for him before receiving this blessing, Esau went out to hunt for venison (deer).

However, Rebecca (the Holy Spirit who knows the thoughts of God, "[11] For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so, no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God." I Corinthians 2:11 NKJV) heard this and sought to ensure that Jacob (Jesus) received this blessing. Accordingly, Rebecca (the Holy Spirit) informed Jacob, prepared the meal for him, and covered him with skin with which he could identify as the first son and receive the blessing.

While Esau (Adam) relied on works as does the present man outside of God, Jacob benefitted from the leading of Rebecca (the Holy Spirit that did all the work for him and sourced the goat from the father's pen). Again, we see the consistency of salvation. God (Isaac) provided the sacrifice (goat from Isaac's pen) to please himself for the blessings of man as sons of God.

In the same way, we must live our everyday life in our new identity as sons of God, getting our daily benefit by the leading of the Spirit from a place of rest. To know more about your sonship, be sure to read the plan: Sonship - Understanding the Believer's Identity in Christ.
