Purpose-Driven Marketing

DAY 1 OF 10

Purpose-Driven Marketing

At first glance, it might seem odd to associate "marketing" with the Bible. Some might even consider the concept unbiblical. But that depends largely on how we define marketing.

Philip Kotler, a renowned marketing expert, offers an insightful definition: "Marketing is not the art of finding clever ways to dispose of what you make. Marketing is the art of creating genuine customer value. It is the art of helping your customer become better off." The emphasis here is not on selling or disposing of products, but on creating value and improving the lives of others.

This lines up perfectly with our selected verses for today as both emphasize the importance of purpose in all our actions, urging us to commit every deed and word for the glory of God. As Christian entrepreneurs, leaders, and workers, this calls us to engage in purpose-driven marketing, where our primary aim is to create genuine value that helps others become better off.

While the Bible is not a marketing textbook and does not provide explicit step-by-step marketing instructions, it is a repository of timeless wisdom and principles that can guide our marketing efforts. It provides the moral and ethical framework within which we can operate to ensure our marketing practices align with our Christian values.

This devotional will help us uncover that wisdom and apply it to our professional and personal lives. Our goal is not just to become better marketers, but to understand and execute the role God designed for us more effectively, for His glory.

Questions

  1. How does the biblical view of doing everything for the glory of God shape your understanding of marketing?
  2. In what ways can your product or service help your customers become better off?
  3. Reflect on a time when you saw marketing that truly added value to your life. What made it impactful?
  4. How can you apply the principles in Colossians 3:17 and 1 Corinthians 10:31 to your work or business?

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the work You've entrusted to us. Help us to see our roles not just as jobs, but as opportunities to serve others and glorify You. As we navigate the world of marketing, guide us to create genuine value for those we serve. Let our work reflect Your love and goodness, and may it always be done for Your glory. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
