Know the Truth: 7-Day Devotional for NICU Parents

DAY 3 OF 8

Lie #2: This is God’s fault.

The Truth: God’s plan is to give us all a rich, satisfying life.

When things don’t go how we plan or tragedy strikes, sometimes we blame God. How could He let this happen? He could have stopped this! I remember asking God, “Why would you let this happen to my child? Did I do something wrong? Are You punishing me? Why me?” Just a year before, I had asked God the same questions when I experienced a miscarriage. His response to me then was the same response now. “Why not you?” He shared that the suffering we experience is not His fault, but He can use it to make us more like Jesus. He also helped me understand that when I overcome a challenge, I can then help someone else overcome the same challenge.

God is not a magician with a fairy wand, waiting to move on our command. He is an all-knowing, all-powerful God, but once again, we live in a fallen world. We must understand God’s heart toward us. He wants to see us prosper. He wants to see us joyful. He wants to see us living our best lives! When pain and suffering occur, He’s there with us. He hurts when we hurt because pain and suffering was never a part of His divine plan for us when He created the earth. However, when the enemy introduced mankind to sin, that changed.

John 10:10 says, “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” The enemy is looking to take and murder every good and perfect thing God created, including your child. The enemy is the one we must rebuke. If he had his way, we would all be miserable or dead. But thankfully, we know God’s purpose is to give us a wonderful life. Every life matters to Him. Your life and your baby’s life.

Reflection:

If you’re angry at God, tell Him. He can handle our emotions. Write down your negative feelings. This is called a lament. David wrote many laments in the Bible, including Psalm 22. By the end of this psalm, what does David realize?
