Be Humble
“And they said, Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves.” Genesis 11:4
Me, me, me… The society in which we live encourages us to demand credit for all our successes. We find out through the biblical account, The Tower of Babel, how this was an issue in biblical days, and how this mentality rarely ends in exhibiting good. In this biblical account, we see people working together to build a tower. The builders experience success, and as a result, they propose creating a tower that extends to heaven. Their purpose was to create a name for themselves. Their motive displayed selfishness and pride— characteristics that never bear good fruit.
In response to their motives, God decides to confuse their language, so they are unable to communicate. The lack of communication stops the production of the tower. Without effective communication, it is impossible to reach the desired outcome. This is also why we must commune with God frequently, so we are aware of His will for our lives. The people’s intent for building such a remarkable tower was to glorify themselves. But, all things we do as Christians should be to glorify God. We need to recall the reason we have been able to attain success; our source is God. Our acknowledgment of God helps us to remain humble. Remember, if you build it yourself, be prepared to sustain it yourself as well- something none of us should desire. We need God’s help.
Pray with us: Lord, help us to see your works in us and acknowledge you in all our ways. Help us to remain little in our eyes as you remain big. In Jesus' name, Amen.
