Philippians: True and Lasting JoySample

Philippians: True and Lasting Joy

DAY 6 OF 10

Joy in Friendships

The gospel has the capacity for true and deep friendships. In this world, friendships are formed for various reasons. But the gospel penetrates our superficial heart and gives us capacity to truly love for love’s sake and not for any other reason. And such friendships centered on the gospel produce great joy.

Are you a true friend who exhibits gospel character? How do you know? The passage portrays two friends who set the standard for genuine friendships.

A true friend shows genuine concern (v.20). There is no ulterior motive or something done out of duty.

A true friend looks for the interests of others (v.21). Often times the first thing that comes to our mind when someone needs us is our own comfort, schedule, time and money. A true friend is not motivated out of self-interest.

A true friend displays proven character (v.22). A friend who exhibits gospel character is not a friend by name but a friend through their actions.

A true friend is sacrificial (v.25-27). A gospel friend displays faithfulness and loyalty through their sacrifice.

A true friend weeps when you weep and rejoices when you rejoice (v.26). Their emotions are consistent with life and circumstances. They rejoice in the success and mourn over the suffering of others.

How can you be a true friend? Have you experienced the love of such a friend? You don’t have to look for anyone other than Christ. Jesus was a true friend. He acted out of genuine concern for you. On the cross, He looked out for your interest and He proved His character by sacrificing His life for you. He pleads your case, is moved with compassion when you fall, delights in your victory and seeks your welfare.

You will be disappointed when you look to sinful humans to display this kind of friendship. It is only when you experience the deep love and friendship of Christ, that you can move toward others and offer such friendship without expecting anything in return. The extent to which your heart delights in Jesus as your friend is the extent to which others will find your friendship Christ like.
